On My Mind: Graffiti

by Reina

If you live in New York you probably have seen big words or pictures sprayed on the sides of buildings or on the sides of trucks. This is called graffiti! Graffiti actually has a long history. It had existed for many decades. I did some research on graffiti and I found some information on the first graffiti writer ever! His name was Darryl McCray. His nickname was “Cornbread” and he was a high school student from Philadelphia who in 1967  started spray painting or tagging city walls to get a girls attention.

Then in the 1970’s graffiti started to be shown in art museums. More people started to do graffiti, but instead of people liking it, it started to be considered a form vandalism. If graffiti is tagged on a building without the owners permission you can get in a lot of trouble and even get arrested. In my opinion graffiti is a really cool type of work. It can sometimes be very detailed or it could be just a bunch of doodles on the side of buildings. Just make sure that your art work doesn’t become a crime.
